Whose nasi lemak is it, and whose is best? I asked ChatGPT and Google’s AI from both sides of the Causeway, then had AI read 2,500 Google reviews of 125 nasi lemak places in KL and Singapore. AI gives Malaysia the credit. Each side’s best get praised for different things.
What I found.
The charts are free to use with a link to this page.
1. Ask AI where nasi lemak is from: Malaysia, from both sides.
I asked ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode “where is nasi lemak from?” 5 times each, from Singapore and from Malaysia (18 October 2026). 19 of 20 answers said Malaysia: all 10 from Malaysia and 9 of 10 from Singapore. 19 of those 19 also said it’s shared or loved across the region. The 20th, ChatGPT from Singapore, said “it’s more accurate to describe it as a shared regional heritage”.

In the answers’ own words: “Nasi lemak is traditionally from Malaysia, but it’s also a beloved national dish in Singapore” (ChatGPT, asked from Singapore) and “Malaysia (where it is the undisputed national dish), but also in neighboring Singapore” (Google AI Mode, asked from Singapore).

2. Ask where the best is, and each side gets only its own.
Asked “where is the best nasi lemak?”, each side got only its own places: 44 places named from Singapore, 50 from Malaysia, none recommended across the border. Twice, Singapore’s answers said Dickson Nasi Lemak is “inspired by Kuala Lumpur’s famous Village Park Restaurant”.

3. AI’s top picks, and what reviews praise them for.

4. Singapore’s reviews praise the plate. KL’s praise the place.
In happy (4-5 star) reviews, Singapore’s praise the chicken more (46% against 28%) and the rice (38% against 21%). KL’s praise the place (35% against 11%) and the meal as a whole (70% against 58%). Both gaps hold in short and long reviews.

5. Stalls in Singapore, shops in KL.
Singapore’s nasi lemak places are mostly hawker stalls (48 of 71); KL’s are mostly their own shops (46 of 51). That goes with the praise for the place.

6. The best-rated get praised for the staff.
At places rated 4.5 or more, happy reviews praise the staff almost twice as often: 45% against 24% at places under 4.2. It holds on both sides. At the middle places, happy reviews praise the sambal and rice more.

7. A plate with chicken: S$7 against RM15.
A plate with chicken, as reviewers wrote it: S$7 in Singapore (about RM22, 48 places), RM15 in KL (18 places). Prices in reviews are rough and can be old.

8. Reviewers’ favourites.
Rated 4.5 or more, with the most Google reviews, one per brand:

Both sides win.
Malaysia gets the credit, and the praise for a place to sit and stay. Singapore gets the praise for the plate, the chicken most of all. The one crossing goes both ways: Singapore’s number two pick is inspired by KL’s number one.
If I were opening one.
I’d copy both sides: the chicken first, like Singapore’s best (46% of its happy reviews praise it), and a place people want to stay, like KL’s (35% praise the place).
Sell nasi lemak? At the best-rated places, happy reviews praise the staff almost twice as often. The staff are praised in 45% of happy reviews at the best-rated places and 24% at the middle-rated places. That goes with higher stars; it doesn’t prove what causes them.
How I did it.
Places: Google Maps searches for nasi lemak across Singapore and the Klang Valley (DataForSEO), cut by an AI read of names and categories, then Google’s 20 most relevant reviews of the most-reviewed (Litescrape). An AI read (Codex) of each place’s reviews kept the 71 Singapore and 51 KL places whose reviews are mainly about nasi lemak, plus three places the AI answers named. A fresh AI read of every one of those 2,500 reviews recorded what each praises and the price of one plate, each with a quote that code found word for word. A second AI read agreed with 27 of 30 praise tags and the amount on 7 of 10 prices. ChatGPT and Google AI Mode answers: DataForSEO, location set to each country, read twice by AI; a count needs both reads to agree. Money: Bank Negara’s noon middle rate, 16 October 2026 (S$1 = RM3.1874).

What it can’t tell you.
What AI tools say today, in English, is not a history ruling, and 20 answers is a small number. Reviews are Google’s 20 most relevant per place, not all of them, and we don’t know who wrote them. Singapore’s places are mostly hawker stalls and KL’s mostly shops, which goes with what reviews praise and may be part of why. Prices in reviews are rough and can be old. Everything here shows what goes together, not what causes what.

What I do with it.
Reading what people already say is one way I find what to build.
