Who wins the Malaysia vs Singapore argument? It depends on the round. I asked AI to read 482 Reddit comments and TikTok and YouTube titles across 19 fights. Singapore wins more rounds. Malaysia wins the biggest one: local food.
What I found.
The rounds are 10 fights where 8 or more people took a side. A few side-fights are left out: who can claim shared dishes, and two smaller JB fights that #3 checks with prices. A round is a win when one side has at least twice the other. The charts are free to use with a link to this page.
1. Singapore wins more rounds. Malaysia wins the biggest.
Singapore wins 4 rounds, Malaysia 3, and 3 are draws. Local food is the biggest: 60 comments answered it.

2. Local food: Malaysia, 44 to 4.
44 of the 48 comments that picked a country picked Malaysia. 10 more said it depends, and 2 said both are the same. The top reason: it’s better at most dishes, not just one.

3. Even Singapore’s Reddit picks Malaysian food.
On r/singapore and r/askSingapore, 14 of 17 comments that picked a country picked Malaysia. A subreddit is not a passport, but home bias doesn’t explain it.

4. Malaysian food has more flavour, 13 to 0.
13 of the 14 comments that answered say Malaysia’s food has more flavour. The two top reasons: more generous seasoning, and Singapore holding back for health.

5. Chicken rice: Singapore, 14 to 1.
Even on Malaysia’s subreddits, all 9 comments that picked a country gave chicken rice to Singapore.

6. Char kway teow: a 9 to 9 draw.
It’s a style, not a winner. Penang fans want it smoky and less sweet. Singapore fans want it dark, wet and sweet.

7. Roti canai or prata: the same bread.
11 of the 13 comments and titles that took a side say it’s one bread with two names. Recipe videos call it both.

8. JB is still cheaper, 31 to 4.
Groceries come up most, then snacks, medicine and glasses. The other side: chain-store goods can cost less in Singapore, and the exchange rate decides it.

9. Getting around: Singapore, 9 to 2.
Trains, buses and walking. Malaysia’s answer is the car, and places close by.

10. Foreign food: Singapore, 11 to 1.
Japanese, Western and fine dining come up most.

11. The credit abroad: Singapore, 8 to 0.
For food both countries share, all 8 comments that picked a side say Singapore gets the credit. The top reason: more money and effort to brand it.

12. Pay or life: it depends.
15 said it depends, 13 picked Malaysia’s life (more space, less stress) and 7 picked Singapore’s pay. On local pay alone, it’s 9 to 9. One answer with 216 upvotes splits it: earn in Singapore, live in Malaysia.

13. Nasi lemak: the most watched, barely argued.
Its videos have 3,448,679 views, more than any other fight, but only 10 comments and titles took a side.

Coming next.
Each episode checks one fight with other data.
- #2: nasi lemak, and who gets the credit.
- #3: is JB still cheaper? Shop prices on both sides.
- #4: Singapore pay or Malaysian life? Pay data.
- #5: is Singapore food really bland? Reviews of the same dishes.
- #6: hawker and mamak: getting worse?
- #7: one dish each, from chicken rice to prata.
How I did it.

- I pulled Reddit threads, TikTok and YouTube videos on Malaysia vs Singapore on 18 October 2026.
- AI read every comment and title for the fights people have, then tagged each one.
- AI then read again the 482 comments and titles tagged to 19 fights (379 comments, 103 video titles), and gave each one’s side, reason and an exact quote.
- Code found every quote in its comment. A second AI read checked 40 random sides and agreed on 38.
- Code counted the sides. A round is a win when one side has at least twice the other.
What it can’t tell you.
- These are people who chose to argue online, not a survey of either country.
- The comments run from 2017 to 2026; most are from 2022 on.
- The tags missed some comments, so the counts show which way people lean, not exact shares.
- A subreddit is not a passport.
