Where is KL’s matcha? Not only near Bangsar. I asked AI to read 44,528 Google reviews of places around KL that serve matcha, and Shah Alam turned out to have almost as many matcha places as specialty cafés.
What I found.
Ten things the reviews and Google searches showed, each with its chart. The charts are free to use with a link to this page.
1. Shah Alam has almost as many matcha places as specialty cafés.
Within 5 km of the middle of Shah Alam’s cafés there are 30 matcha places and 32 specialty cafés. Around Bangsar it’s 67 and 190.

2. Matcha took over café reviews.
In 2023, 1.4% of KL café reviews used the word matcha, about 1 in 70. In 2025 it was 6.2%, about 1 in 16.

3. “Matcha near me” searches grew 22 times.
In Malaysia they went from about 1,000 a month in 2023 to 23,425 in 2026 so far. “Cafe near me” grew 2.3 times.

4. Strawberry matcha beats the plain latte.
Reviews name strawberry matcha at 247 matcha places and a plain matcha latte at 234. Searches for “strawberry matcha” went from 211 a month in 2023 to 21,000 in 2026.

5. A matcha latte costs about RM14.
That’s the middle of 51 prices reviewers wrote at matcha places. A coffee at KL cafés is about RM10.

6. The top complaint isn’t sugar.
It’s weak, watery matcha, at 58 of the 406 matcha places. Too pricey comes next at 52, and too sweet at 37.

7. Matcha spreads out more than coffee.
Nearly 6 in 10 specialty cafés sit within 10 km of Bangsar. Fewer than half of matcha places do: 184 of 406. Outside KL and PJ, Shah Alam has the most (47), then Subang Jaya, Kajang and Cyberjaya.

8. The matcha reviews name most is Niko Neko.
When reviews say which matcha a place uses, Niko Neko comes up at 22 matcha places. When they name a town, it’s Uji, at 12.

9. Hojicha is still climbing.
Matcha searches in Malaysia peaked in 2025 and averaged 29,350 a month in 2026 so far. Hojicha, a roasted green tea, averaged 7,888, its most yet.

10. If I were opening one, I’d open it in Bangi.
Around Bangi, 8.2% of café reviews since 2025 say matcha, close to Shah Alam’s 8.8%. But Bangi has 3.8 matcha places per 100 cafés, against Shah Alam’s 6.

How I did it.
I searched Google Maps around the Klang Valley in October 2026 for matcha, matcha cafe and matcha bar.
- 6,565 places came up.
- AI took out big chains, restaurants and shops, and kept 4,425.
- It read the reviews of the 2,460 places whose reviews mention matcha: 44,528 reviews, about 18 a place, the ones Google shows first.
- A place counts as a matcha place when its reviews single out its matcha. 406 do: 89 built on matcha and 317 known for it.
- Café reviews by year come from the 11,410 KL cafés I read for AI Reads Malaysia #1.
- Searches are Google’s monthly estimates for all of Malaysia. 2026 means January to August.

What it can’t tell you.
The numbers show patterns, not the truth about any one place.
- AI read each place’s top reviews, not all of them, so small differences are noise.
- Prices are what reviewers wrote: 51 matcha latte prices for the whole of KL, too few to compare areas.
- Big chains were left out on purpose: they sell matcha, but it isn’t why people go.
- “Within 5 km” and “within 10 km” are straight lines from the middle of each area’s cafés, not drives.
- Google’s listed places change; a few may have closed.

What I do with it.
Reading what people already say is one way I find what to build, and where.
